Who is Demarco, the flamenco artist accumulating thousands of views on ‘YouTube’?
For those who, at this point, do not know the story of Demarco Flamenco, it begins in Utrera 40 years ago. Back when he was just Marcos Borrego López, a boy who sang with ease at family gatherings. Friends were his first followers. Music, since childhood, was his great passion. He was the son of Marcos, a professional musician who infected him with an unconditional love for this art.
As an adult, he would create and hum verses into the air, without pen or paper, inside a butane delivery truck—the job he held for over a decade. Verses that he would later turn into songs in the privacy of his home simply for fun. One fine day, he decided to share his compositions with the world. He posted them online and everything blew up: Demarco Flamenco was born.
Soon, a multinational label, Warner Music, noticed him to release his first album—Uno—with which he has achieved dizzying figures: over 180 thousand followers on Instagram, one million monthly listeners on Spotify, a physical Gold record, and a digital Platinum record, among other triumphs. But mainly, he has gained a loyal audience that has accompanied him in the nearly 200 concerts he has given in just two years, singing his songs and moving to his melodies.
The musician’s story now continues with his new album: “Le sonrío al agua” (Warner Music), produced by Gustavo Olmedo. In this latest work, Demarco proves he is an artist here for the long haul. He moves forward musically by adding the experience gained during these years on stage, without losing the essence of his roots. He consolidates his career by combining the best of his beginnings—flamenco, light, catchy melodies, universal feelings—with the new: the fusion of flamenco with current musical styles, more nuances, and the sound of a full band. Most of his new songs were born in the early hours of the morning in the privacy of his home, in a hotel room, or in a van on the way to a concert. Experiences that can be felt in the lyrics.
Demarco Flamenco smiles at the water (le sonríe al agua) when he thinks about having materialized his father’s dream, his daughter who is his biggest fan, and every person who enjoys his compositions. Marcos was a boy without a set plan in music, but without looking for it, he is building a path of water that does not stagnate, advancing like an endless sea.
